The Maryland Purple Line project has reached an important milestone, with officials confirming that the “28th and final light-rail vehicle” has arrived ahead of its projected timeline.
Ray Biggs II, the Senior Project Director for the Purple Line, highlighted this achievement, stating that it reflects the impressive advancements made in 2025. You can find more details in the official news release.
Each of these 142-foot trains has the capacity to carry up to 430 passengers, including seating for 80 individuals, as well as space for eight wheelchairs and eight bicycles. These vehicles were constructed by CAF in Spain and then assembled in Elmira, New York.
According to the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Maryland Transit Administration, these light rail vehicles are among the longest currently operating in the United States. The final vehicle’s delivery was recorded on November 19.
“Every milestone we achieve brings us closer to offering a more accessible and better-connected region,” Biggs remarked.

The MDTA reports that the Purple Line construction is currently 84.6% finished, with all rail installed in Prince George’s County and over 148,000 feet of the total 193,100 feet of track already laid.
This 16-mile light rail corridor, which features 21 stations, will effectively link Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Additionally, it will connect with Metro’s Red, Green, and Orange lines, as well as MARC, Amtrak, and local bus services.
After encountering several delays, the Purple Line is anticipated to commence operations in 2027.
