The vibrant hues of fall are making their way across Maryland, and one of the premier destinations for experiencing this seasonal transformation is located right here in the state.
Allegany County, situated in Western Maryland, has been recognized as the second best place to visit for fall by USA TODAY 10BEST’s 2026 Readers’ Choice awards. The accolade shines a spotlight on the stunning Appalachian Mountains and the multitude of ways visitors can enjoy leaf-peeping, such as taking a ride on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad or cycling along the C&O Canal National Historical Park and Towpath.
In addition, various fall festivals in the area provide an array of music, delicious food, and enjoyable activities, all set against a backdrop of colorful autumn foliage.
If you’re considering a visit to witness the stunning fall leaves, there is still ample time to plan your trip.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) anticipates an average foliage season this year, with the vibrant colors beginning to emerge first in the far Western Maryland region before gradually spreading eastward toward the Eastern Shore and Southern Maryland.
This year, unusually warm temperatures may result in a slight delay of peak color season.
“Weather significantly influences both the color and timing of leaf changes. This year, temperatures have been higher than average, along with limited rainfall during the summer months and normal to above-average rainfall in the spring and late summer,” said Southern Region Regional Forester Mark Muir. “The warmer-than-normal start to fall may push the onset of peak colors back a little.”
DNR cautions that dry weather can stress trees, which may lead to less vivid colors or earlier leaf drop. In contrast, regular rainfall and occasional cold fronts create optimal conditions for brilliant autumn displays.
Throughout the month of November, DNR plans to issue weekly foliage reports that will monitor and update the changing conditions across various regions of Maryland.
