Kusshi Sushi is moving forward with plans to open its long-awaited restaurant in Germantown, having recently secured a permit for renovations at the new location.
The permit, valued at $150,000, allows for significant updates to the space, signaling progress for the restaurant, which Kusshi confirmed is still part of its expansion strategy in a recent communication with The MoCoShow. However, an exact opening date has yet to be announced.
As previously reported, Kusshi signed a lease last year to occupy the former Zane Japanese Eatery, located next to Beers and Cheers in Germantown. This site has also housed Indian Bistro and EN Asian Bistro and Sushi in the past.
Once operational, the Germantown location will mark Kusshi’s first establishment in upcounty Montgomery County. This permit comes as the popular sushi brand continues to expand across the region, including plans for two additional Maryland locations. Last week, it was reported that Kusshi is set to open a second restaurant in Bethesda at 4611 Sangamore Rd, taking over the former Passion Fin space.
Additionally, Kusshi is preparing to enter Prince George’s County for the first time with a new restaurant at The Station at Riverdale Park, located at 4501 Woodberry St, which was previously home to Le Fantome Food Hall before its closure in April 2025. Opening dates for the Bethesda and Riverdale Park locations have not been disclosed yet.
Kusshi first opened its doors at Pike & Rose in North Bethesda in 2018 and quickly gained popularity for its sushi offerings, specialty rolls, and modern, casual dining experience. The brand has since expanded throughout the DMV, with existing locations in Bethesda, Rockville Town Square, and Downtown Silver Spring, along with a growing presence in Northern Virginia.
