Rockville, MD – A jury in Montgomery County has convicted 35-year-old Jeriel Martin from Silver Spring of second-degree murder and the use of a handgun in a violent crime, following the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Jamar Jenifer. The verdict was delivered on September 11, 2026, in the Circuit Court before Judge J. Bradford McCullough.
Martin is facing a potential prison sentence of up to 60 years, with a sentencing hearing set for December 15, 2026.
The incident occurred on the morning of September 2, 2024, when Montgomery County Police received reports of a man found lying in an alley in the 8000 block of 13th Street in Silver Spring. The victim, later identified as Jamar Jenifer, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene. Surveillance footage from the Galaxy Apartments captured the moments leading up to the shooting, showing an exchange between Jenifer and Martin before Martin approached Jenifer, drew a handgun, and shot him four times. Jenifer was unarmed at the time, and while the two men were acquainted, the motive for the shooting remains unclear.
At the time of the incident, Martin was on probation for a previous gun possession charge. During the trial, a recorded conversation between Martin and a friend was presented, in which Martin compared taking Jenifer’s life to squashing a bug. This disturbing remark was played for the jury.
State’s Attorney John McCarthy commented on the case, stating, “This defendant displayed a stunning lack of remorse and outlook on the ability to take a life. Jamar Jenifer was a son, father, and brother. We will continue to seek justice for Mr. Jenifer and his family at sentencing.”
Prosecutors Mary Herdman and Ian Dombroski are handling the case.
