Craig Budd Sr., a beloved figure in the Germantown community, tragically lost his life in a car accident on the evening of August 28. The incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. at the intersection of North Frederick Avenue and Professional Drive in Gaithersburg, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His daughter, ShaVonté, shared a heartfelt tribute, reflecting on a missed call she intended to return. “I missed your call, thinking I would get to call you back once I got settled,” she wrote, expressing her disbelief that their time together was cut short.
Budd was well-known in Montgomery County, where he built lasting connections through his work as a barber at Major League Barbers in Montgomery Village, his musical contributions to the go-go scene, and his mentorship to many young people. He was affectionately known by various names, including “Major-League Craig” at the barbershop and “Santo” within the go-go community, where he was associated with the High Potential Band.
A father of two and grandfather to four, Budd’s family described him as a man who wore many hats and left a profound impact on those around him. “No matter how you knew Craig, chances are you have a story about him and carry a piece of his wisdom he so freely shared,” his children noted in a statement announcing a fundraiser in his memory.
ShaVonté reflected on her father’s guidance, stating that he was always her go-to person during tough times. “The one thing I desperately need right now is my DAD to help me figure out how I’m supposed to navigate a world without HIM physically in it,” she shared, emphasizing the deep bond they had.
The news of Budd’s passing has resonated throughout the community, with Hosea Williams expressing condolences on behalf of the go-go community, remembering Budd as a “good man, good spirit, good soul.” Many have echoed this sentiment, describing him as a “Mo County legend.”
In light of their loss, ShaVonté and her brother Craig “CJ” Budd Jr. have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral and memorial expenses, aiming to honor their father’s life and legacy. They also encouraged those unable to contribute financially to share memories of Budd or keep the family in their thoughts and prayers.
“Right now, I’m just reminiscing and so thankful and blessed to be your daughter and for you to be my dad in this lifetime,” ShaVonté expressed. “I’d choose you in every lifetime.” As she continues to process her grief, she remains steadfast in her identity as “FOREVER A DADDY’S GIRL.”
