Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services has unveiled the 12th episode of its podcast series, Spirited Discussions. This episode, titled “Voices from Control Systems Around the Country,” showcases insights from industry experts regarding national alcohol trends and innovations, while also spotlighting the distinctive offerings from states that manage their own alcohol beverage systems.
In this episode, host Jocelyn Rawat welcomes fifteen guests from various alcohol control systems across the nation. They delve into how these systems strike a balance between product selection, fair pricing, and public health, all while celebrating local flavors. Listeners can also look forward to travel tips, signature drinks from different states, and valuable insights into the future of the alcohol industry, including the reasons many communities continue to support the control model.
All states regulate alcohol through licensing and oversight. However, in a control system, the government also sells alcoholic beverages at both wholesale and retail levels, using the generated revenue to fund public programs and infrastructure. Approximately 25% of the U.S. population resides in areas governed by a control jurisdiction for alcohol distribution.
Listeners will have the chance to explore some fun and quirky questions, such as:
- How does Prohibition still impact today’s spirits in North Carolina?
- Which mythical creatures craft the best drinks in West Virginia?
- Who is responsible for the huckleberry theft in Montana?
Established in 1938, the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA) serves states and jurisdictions that directly oversee the sale and distribution of alcohol. Currently, ABS Director Kathie Durbin is in her one-year term as chair of the NABCA Board.

ABS serves as the alcohol wholesaler for beer, wine, and spirits in Montgomery County, operating 27 retail stores throughout the area. Additionally, ABS oversees alcohol licensing, enforcement, and education for over 1,000 businesses. With annual net income reaching tens of millions, its profits help reduce County debt and significantly contribute to the general fund, which supports resident services that would otherwise require funding from County tax dollars.
