Empowering Local Youth: Charles County’s Juneteenth Initiative Funds College Opportunities

Share

Thirteen graduates from local high schools in Charles County have been awarded scholarships by the Charles County Juneteenth Foundation Inc., helping to alleviate their college expenses as they transition into higher education this fall. Each student received a scholarship of $700, awarded based on the submission of an essay, high school transcript, and proof of college acceptance as part of the application criteria.

This nonprofit organization, dedicated to educational initiatives and community enrichment, utilizes these scholarships to further its mission of celebrating Juneteenth history and African American heritage in Charles County. The awards honor academic excellence and community engagement among students from the Class of 2026.

Juneteenth marks the liberation of enslaved individuals in Texas on June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth has gained greater prominence across the nation, with organizations like the Charles County Juneteenth Foundation hosting events and programs that link this important history to the local narratives of resilience and contributions.

Since its inception in 2020, the foundation has been actively involved in community celebrations and educational programs, impacting over 5,000 individuals through cultural initiatives, family events, and support for local BIPOC businesses. The scholarship program expands this outreach by directly investing in the education of Charles County’s youth.

Among the recipients are London Brehon and Makai Fitch, both graduates of La Plata High School, who are set to attend North Carolina A&T State University. Other awarded students include Jermiah Harrison of North Point High School and Jada Harry from Westlake High School, heading to Temple University, along with Dylan Leigh from Henry E. Lackey High School, who will enroll at Morgan State University. Notable mentions also include Ashley Martinez from Maurice J. McDonough High School going to Towson University, Kamille Mauldin from Westlake heading to Temple, Drew Pearson from North Point going to Rutgers University, and Lamont Spriggs Jr. from St. Charles High School who will attend The Catholic University of America.

Additionally, recipients include Sanai Thomas from North Point, set to study at Tuskegee University; Aaliyah Underwood, also from North Point, who will attend Spelman College; Trayon White Jr. from McDonough heading to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore; and Journey Wooden from North Point going to Stevenson University. These scholars represent a diverse array of Charles County high schools and will pursue education at various institutions across the mid-Atlantic and beyond.

For many families in Charles County, such scholarships offer crucial financial relief as they prepare for the rising costs of higher education. The foundation’s commitment to supporting students from marginalized backgrounds aligns with broader initiatives in Southern Maryland aimed at increasing access to college opportunities.

Funding for these scholarships comes from generous donations and sponsorships that support the foundation’s ongoing efforts throughout the year. Community members interested in contributing or seeking information about future events can reach out to the foundation via email. The organization continues to organize its annual Juneteenth celebration and various programs that integrate historical education with practical assistance for local community members.

By providing financial resources to graduating seniors, the Charles County Juneteenth Foundation not only honors the legacy of African American history but also lays the groundwork for future opportunities. The thirteen scholarship recipients are now part of a flourishing network of students whose educational journeys are fostered by this local initiative.
