For enthusiasts of graphic novels, illustrated essays, and visual storytelling, the upcoming workshop by Nguyên Khôi Nguyễn—“Making Comics Come Alive”—is a must-attend event. Scheduled for Saturday, May 9, at Good Contrivance Farm, this generative workshop welcomes writers from all walks of life. Importantly, participants need not be skilled artists; all you need is curiosity and enthusiasm to explore innovative ways to enhance your writing through illustrations.

Nguyên, whose name is pronounced “win,” is an accomplished interdisciplinary artist and educator. His work has graced the pages of notable publications such as the The New Yorker and McSweeney’s. He is also the author of the Ignatz-nominated comic series The Gulf, the vocalist and pianist for the jazz trio Superior Cling, and co-creator of the multimedia cooking website Mom’s Viet Kitchen. Currently, he serves as the Assistant Teaching Professor of Digital Media at Loyola University Maryland and has received various accolades, including The Baker Prize in Literary Arts and a Rubys Artist Grant. Residing in Baltimore with his wife and two sons, Nguyễn is dedicated to fostering creativity through his art.

In an engaging conversation, Nguyễn shared valuable insights for those interested in graphic narratives:

With graphic novels and illustrated stories gaining immense popularity, what do you believe contributes to that trend?

As a parent, I find it astonishing how many comic books are accessible to children today. I believe that early exposure significantly encourages kids to continue reading graphic narratives as they grow up, thus broadening the audience for this expressive art form.

What led you to explore graphic narratives in your career?

During my childhood, I enjoyed reading and sketching superhero comics, but I eventually moved away from that phase. In my twenties, I discovered graphic novels and was captivated by their artistry and storytelling potential. After trying my hand at the medium, I’ve spent the last 14 years refining my skills.

Your upcoming workshop on May 9 aims to guide writers in effectively using graphic elements. Is it necessary for participants to possess artistic skills to incorporate illustrations into their work?

Absolutely not! Comic creation is accessible to everyone, including writers. When I create comics, I embrace the uninhibited essence of my eight-year-old self. Thus, you don’t need advanced drawing abilities to convey your ideas through comics.

Can you recommend three essential graphic novels for newcomers to the genre?

Certainly! Here are my top picks:

1. “Edena” by Moebius

2. “Hot Comb” by Ebony Flowers

3. “Maus” by Art Spiegelman

What key illustration techniques do these works demonstrate for aspiring writers?

1. Keep it simple.
2. Show, don’t tell.
3. Use panels to manipulate time.
4. Understand that pictures can convey additional meanings beyond merely illustrating text.
5. Allow your drawings to lead you on unexpected creative journeys.

What advice would you give those interested in integrating illustrations into their writing?

Start small by focusing on single-panel comics. This succinct format combines both visual art and text effectively, enabling you to convey ideas quickly through sketching.
