Discover Navy Yard’s Must-Visit Day-to-Night Chinese Restaurant!

Share

Prepare yourself for the arrival of Canton Disco, an exciting new dining destination in Navy Yard brought to you by a partner from a leading local pizza establishment and two notable figures from the hospitality scene.

Set to open its doors in February, Canton Disco will serve as a cozy cafe during daytime hours, transforming into an inviting full-service restaurant and bar come evening. The new establishment will occupy the former site of Pho Junkies, which preceded Justin’s Cafe (1025 1st Street SE).

Labeling itself as “Cantonese-inspired,” this fresh addition to the neighborhood is a collaboration between Side Door Pizza co-founder Brian Schram, renowned chef Timothy Yu, and esteemed sommelier Brent Kroll. Anticipation builds for Canton Disco’s menu, especially considering Yu’s family previously owned Hollywood East Cafe, a highly-regarded Chinese restaurant that closed in Wheaton, Maryland last summer after nearly 30 years of operation. Diners can expect a tantalizing array of flavorful dishes, such as garlic-encrusted salt and pepper wings, a fried whole branzino adorned with Fresno peppers, and spicy chile wontons.

Kroll, who gained acclaim for his leadership at innovative wine bar Maxwell Park in Shaw, will curate a diverse drinks menu focusing on spirits, tea, cocktails, and a thoughtfully selected wine list. This collaboration marks the first project for this trio of seasoned friends in the industry, who have been searching for the ideal venture to unite their talents.

Taking inspiration from traditional Chinese dining experiences, Canton Disco will also incorporate vibrant decorative elements reminiscent of the lively nightlife in 1970s Hong Kong. Guests can expect an ambiance that evokes the energetic and dimly lit vibes found at D.C.’s popular Bar Chinois.

Canton Disco signifies a major expansion for Schram, who initially opened his compact, Detroit-style pizza restaurant nearby during the pandemic.

In another noteworthy development in Navy Yard, the acclaimed pasta spot Scolapasta is set to take over the recently closed ramen bar Basebowl, located across from Nationals Park.
