Upcoming Layoffs: Maryland Companies on This Week’s List

An increasing number of companies across various sectors in the U.S., including some based in Maryland, are set to implement layoffs this week, as indicated by recent filings and announcements.

In Maryland, notable layoffs include Hornblower Cruises and Events, which announced plans to cut between 51 and 100 jobs on April 25. Additionally, IPIC Theaters in Bethesda will be reducing its workforce by 116 positions on April 28 due to its closure.

As per the latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Maryland’s unemployment rate stands at approximately 4.3 percent.

The job reductions, compiled by Newsweek, are driven by a combination of restructuring, cost-cutting strategies, and shifts related to artificial intelligence and evolving market dynamics.

The layoffs affect a wide range of industries, including technology, finance, healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality, and agriculture, highlighting the extensive workforce reductions occurring throughout the U.S. economy.

Experts suggest that many companies are reducing their workforce in response to economic challenges and are increasingly investing in automation and artificial intelligence. This trend has led to significant job cuts across various sectors in 2026, according to Business Insider.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) mandates that employers with 100 or more employees provide a 60-day advance written notice of plant closures or mass layoffs. Business Insider has compiled its list from the WARN Tracker.

Some of the job cuts planned for 2026 were previously disclosed, including:

  • Amazon: approximately 16,000 jobs as part of a corporate restructuring.
  • UPS: plans to reduce its workforce by 30,000, mainly through attrition.
  • Oracle: reports suggest tens of thousands of layoffs, with estimates around 30,000 jobs globally.

Several other major companies have announced significant but less precisely defined layoffs:
