The Mood Center, a ketamine therapy facility located in Annapolis, has officially launched a new branch in Columbia, Montgomery County, Maryland.

The expansion was announced on Monday and was celebrated with an open house event on Thursday at their new premises at 11055 Little Patuxent Parkway.

A spokesperson for The Mood Center noted that this expansion mirrors a growing trend across the United States, highlighting that the number of ketamine clinics has surged from fewer than 100 in 2015 to over 1,500 projected by 2026.

Initially developed in the 1960s, ketamine was widely used as an anesthetic during the Vietnam War. According to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, it is generally administered in clinical environments within healthcare settings.

“By establishing a center in Columbia, the organization strategically positions itself between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., allowing it to cater to a larger audience, particularly those who have faced challenges with traditional treatments for conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic pain,” the company stated.

“The move to Columbia ultimately aims to enhance accessibility and impact. This development enables the center to expand its mission, giving more people the chance to improve their quality of life rather than merely managing symptoms,” they added.

The FDA has approved ketamine for use as an anesthetic, where it is frequently applied in surgical, operative, and emergency trauma contexts, as highlighted in a 2024 report by the Bloomberg School.

Covering 2,213 square feet, The Mood Center in Columbia will provide a range of services, including ketamine therapy, Spravato (a version of ketamine that insurance typically covers), and medication management, among other treatments. This new location marks The Mood Center’s second clinic.

Equipped with six treatment rooms, the Columbia facility will be open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with plans to extend its operating days to include Tuesdays and Thursdays in the near future.
