This day-long celebration boasts an exciting lineup of events and activities, all free for the public, including museum entry. Highlights of the day will include live music and dance performances, an open mic event, a poetry slam, docent-led tours of the museum, hands-on art workshops, and much more.

AVAM’s Executive Director, Ellen Owens, expressed, “Very few figures in our nation’s history have carried such a grand and impactful vision as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” She emphasized, “Through our Dare to Dream Day celebration, we reaffirm our commitment to the principles he advocated for in pursuit of a more fair and just society, inviting individuals of all ages to engage in the ongoing efforts to realize his vision in our present times.”

This year’s activities are designed to encourage participation that resonates with Dr. King’s ideals of peace and strength. Attendees can create a physical representation of hope and healing at the Peace Birds Art Workshop. Lead author B. Sharise Moore will guide a read-along and workshop inspired by her book, A City Dream, where they can envision a world enriched by love and creativity. There’s also the chance to take center stage at the Open Mic and Poetry Slam, along with captivating performances from the Divine Anointing Choir and the Keur Khaleyi African Dancers, who are back for another exciting year with AVAM.

The Open Mic and Poetry Slam is a cherished tradition during Dare to Dream Day, offering artists of all ages a platform to showcase their talents before an enthusiastic audience at the museum, with exciting cash prizes to be won. This engaging event will be hosted on the Jim Rouse Visionary Center’s (JRVC) third floor. Those wishing to participate can register at the JRVC first floor desk before 1 p.m. Additionally, a Poetry Making Activity will also be available for participants who prefer a non-competitive environment.

For those planning to spend the entire day at the museum, the AVAM Café located on the third floor of the Main Building will offer food and drink options to enjoy.

In the spirit of Dr. King’s vision, attendees are encouraged to contribute new, unused toiletry items, food, and winter clothing collected in gallon Ziplock bags, all in support of Healthcare for the Homeless. This organization provides vital health-related services, education, and advocacy to help alleviate the struggles of homelessness.

Mark your calendars for AVAM’s MLK Dare to Dream Day, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is conveniently situated at 800 Key Highway, Baltimore, MD.
