In a tragic incident on I-270 in Montgomery County, a mother and daughter lost their lives in a crash that occurred on Saturday, August 29. Following the accident, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken action against the driver involved, Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco, by lodging a detainer, as announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Caballero-Nolasco, a 32-year-old resident of Germantown and a national from El Salvador, is accused of illegally entering the United States. On Tuesday, September 1, ICE requested that Maryland authorities keep him in custody, preventing his release.
The fatal collision took place shortly before 6:50 p.m. when Caballero-Nolasco was driving a Ford Mustang north in the southbound lanes of I-270 near Democracy Boulevard. He collided head-on with a Toyota Camry occupied by Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, of Burke, and her daughter, Areebah Jahin, 23, of Alexandria, along with two other family members.
Begum and Jahin were pronounced dead at the scene, while a 62-year-old man driving the Camry and an 8-year-old girl were transported to local hospitals with injuries. Caballero-Nolasco was also hospitalized before being moved to the Montgomery County Detention Center.
Maryland State Police have indicated that alcohol impairment may have played a role in the crash. Caballero-Nolasco faces several charges, including:
- Two counts of gross negligent manslaughter;
- Two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol;
- Life-threatening injury by motor vehicle.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin described the incident as “completely avoidable,” emphasizing the unnecessary loss of life. “Musammat Shamima Begum and Areebah Jahin should still be alive,” he stated. “ICE has lodged a detainer asking officials in Maryland to commit to not releasing this killer back onto our streets.”
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with the Maryland State Police Crash Team continuing to gather evidence and details.
