Seneca Valley High School in Germantown holds the title of the largest public high school in Maryland when it comes to building size. The school, located at 19401 Crystal Rock Drive, spans approximately 440,000 to 452,000 square feet, depending on the source. Although there is no statewide database that ranks high schools by square footage, research indicates that Seneca Valley remains the largest public high school facility in the state.
The school first opened its doors in 1974 on land that was once owned by the famed baseball pitcher Walter Johnson, who had purchased the property in 1935. Before the establishment of Northwest High School in 1998, Seneca Valley served as the sole high school in Germantown.
During its first academic year, 1974-1975, under Principal Nathan Pearson, Seneca Valley catered to students in grades seven through ten. The following year, it transitioned to serving grades nine through eleven as eighth graders moved to the newly opened Ridgeview Junior High School in Gaithersburg. By the 1976-1977 school year, the school had evolved into a senior high school for grades ten through twelve, celebrating its first graduating class in June 1977. In 1988, it adopted its current structure of grades nine through twelve.
The original building was demolished in 2020 to make way for a new facility that opened in 2021. The new structure features a four-story academic wing and a two-story public wing, with classrooms arranged around two large courtyards designed to enhance natural light and facilitate student movement.
Facilities in the public wing include a 900-seat auditorium, athletic amenities, and a dining hall. The school also boasts a Career and Technical Education wing with programs in automotive, construction trades, architectural design, and technical drawing.
Among its sustainability features is a vegetated roof system, and the campus includes a multi-use turf stadium, seven tennis courts, four basketball courts, and grass fields for baseball and softball. The design and construction of Seneca Valley have received accolades, including an Honorable Mention in the 2022 Excellence in Construction awards from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Metro Washington and Virginia, as well as an Outstanding Project honor in Learning By Design’s 2022 Architectural and Interior Design Awards of Excellence.
Interestingly, despite its impressive size, Seneca Valley is not the largest high school in Maryland by student enrollment; it ranked 16th in the state in terms of enrollment as of 2025.
While there is no comprehensive database detailing the square footage of every high school in Maryland, it is clear that several other large high schools fall short of Seneca Valley’s size. For instance, Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring measures around 378,000 square feet, Severna Park High School in Anne Arundel County ranges from 354,000 to 366,000 square feet, and Gaithersburg High School, rebuilt in 2013, is approximately 325,000 square feet. Bowie High School’s facilities total around 330,000 square feet across its main and annex buildings.
Future projects are set to add to Maryland’s list of large high school facilities. The upcoming Wootton High School, planned for the Crown Farm site in Gaithersburg, is expected to cover about 358,000 square feet, while the rebuilt Towson High School is projected to be between 320,000 and 340,000 square feet.
Even with these significant developments on the horizon, none of the planned facilities are expected to match the overall size of Seneca Valley, solidifying its status as Maryland’s largest public high school by square footage based on current records and research.
