A recent trip to Las Vegas has led to the resignation of Montgomery County Police Chief Marc Yamada, following an investigation by the county’s inspector general.
Yamada stepped down on Friday after the probe found that he had misled officials regarding the presence of a relative, identified as his son, at a law enforcement conference. The inspector general’s report indicated that Yamada falsely claimed he was not involved in the decision to have his son accompany him as part of his “protection detail.”
The investigation revealed that Yamada violated county regulations by providing misleading information. Additionally, it was found that he did not log any leave for approximately two years, despite being off duty on multiple occasions, including during a golf tournament.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich stated that Yamada’s resignation was requested due to the seriousness of the findings. “This stuff was serious enough we didn’t have a choice,” Elrich remarked, expressing surprise at the circumstances surrounding Yamada’s departure.
Yamada, who had served on the police force for 37 years before being appointed chief in 2024, informed his colleagues in an email that he was retiring and referred to his time in service as “the privilege of my lifetime.”
Jason Johnson, president of the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund, expressed his disappointment regarding the situation. He noted that abrupt leadership changes can be detrimental, especially when they occur under troubling circumstances. “Rank-and-file police officers are the ones that have to pay the price when the trust is eroded because of how they’re treated in their daily duties and interacting with the public,” Johnson commented.
