Steve Pappas, a pivotal figure in the growth of The Greene Turtle restaurant chain, passed away on Wednesday, October 28. His contributions to the establishment, which began as a small pub in Ocean City, Maryland, have left a lasting impact on the region’s dining scene, as reported by The Baltimore Sun.
The Greene Turtle first opened its doors in 1976, and Pappas, along with his college friend Tommy Dickerson, acquired the restaurant in 1981. They transformed it into a popular sports bar, leading to its expansion across the Mid-Atlantic area.
By 1986, the business had established its second location in Baltimore’s Fells Point, followed by a third in Laurel in 1990. The franchise model was initiated in 2002, and by 2010, The Greene Turtle boasted around 30 locations throughout the region.
Currently, there is a Greene Turtle in Olney, and the chain previously operated a restaurant in Germantown.
Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan, who had known Pappas for about 50 years, expressed his sorrow over the loss, calling it a significant blow to the community. He remembered Pappas for his vibrant personality, generosity, and the many ways he contributed to the town.
