Beginning July 1, minimum wage workers in Montgomery County, Maryland, will see an increase in their hourly pay.
This wage adjustment is part of a 2017 legislative measure aimed at ensuring that the lowest earners can keep pace with inflation. The increase is tied to the local consumer price index, which rose approximately 2% in the past year.
The amount by which minimum wage workers will see their pay increase varies based on the size of the employer.
For workers at small businesses—defined as those with 10 or fewer employees—there will be an increase of 45 cents per hour, bringing their pay to $15.95 an hour.
Mid-size companies will see their minimum wage workers receive an additional 50 cents per hour, elevating their wage to $16.50 an hour, which marks the most significant increment for this year.
In contrast, organizations with more than 50 employees will implement a 35-cent increase to the current minimum wage, lifting it to $18 an hour.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich emphasized that this revision to the county’s minimum wage is integral to fostering an economy that benefits all community members.
“Ensuring fair pay strengthens families, stabilizes our workforce, and supports small businesses that rely on local spending. Tying the minimum wage to inflation creates predictability for employers and workers alike and reinforces our shared goal of a more equitable and sustainable economy,” Elrich stated in a news release.
He added, “At a time when federal policies allow billionaires to grow wealthier by the minute, I am proud that Montgomery County’s law ensures the earnings of our community’s lowest-paid workers at least keep pace with inflation.”
