DMV Region Utility Companies Gear Up: Essential Resources for Potential Storm Power Outages

While snow may be our initial concern, the potential for freezing rain and ice accumulating on trees and power lines poses a significant threat. This could lead to downed lines, leaving many without electricity.

In the coming days, we will likely experience the impacts of snow, ice, and frigid temperatures.

Following the snowfall, the larger issue will be the expected freezing rain and ice buildup on tree branches and electrical lines, increasing the risk of them falling and causing power outages. Utility providers across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia have been proactive, preparing for this scenario over the past few days to ensure a swift response.

“We are ensuring that we have sufficient crews ready to address outages if they arise,” stated Tammy Sanford, who oversees regional power operations for Pepco, a key electricity provider in the District and Maryland.

The extent of ice accumulation and the locations of any downed lines will determine the speed at which crews can restore power. Aisha Khan from Dominion Energy in Virginia informed WTOP that power restoration could take anywhere from hours to several days.

“It is important to note that the restoration process may not be instantaneous,” Khan emphasized.

Khan also advised exercising caution around downed power lines.

“Always treat downed lines as if they are live and dangerous. We recommend maintaining a distance of at least 30 feet from them,” she cautioned.

Both Pepco and Dominion recommend preparing for potential outages by having enough food and water for up to 72 hours, and ensuring that your phone is charged.

If you experience a power outage, remember to contact your utility provider to report it—don’t assume they are already aware.

Pepco’s Sanford added that there is one crucial step individuals can take to help accelerate the restoration efforts.

“If it’s safe for you to stay off the roads, that would greatly assist first responders, including fire and police services, as well as our repair teams, in navigating the area effectively,” she advised.
