A house fire in the Wheaton area of Montgomery County was sparked by a discarded cigarette, displacing five residents on Monday. The incident occurred on Valleywood Drive, close to Kayson Street.
According to Pete Piringer, a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS), the flames quickly spread up the exterior of the house, causing significant damage to the second floor and attic.
Over 50 firefighters responded to the scene and successfully extinguished the fire. The estimated damage to the property is around $120,000.
Fortunately, smoke alarms alerted the sleeping occupants, allowing them to escape without injury.
