Celebrate Culture: Shakespeare in Harlem, MLK Day Events, Poe’s Birthday, and More!

This weekend in Baltimore, immerse yourself in theatrical productions, a wide range of concerts, and various other exciting activities.

Additionally, there will be events honoring the influential civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., both on the official holiday and in the days leading up to it.

Langston Hughes’ Shakespeare in Harlem, from Thursday, Jan. 15, to Sunday, Jan. 18, at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. This production adapts a collection of Langston Hughes’ poems, showcasing the Black experience during the vibrant Harlem Renaissance.

Zebrafish Models for Biomedical and Environmental Research, Thursday, Jan. 15, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Institute for Marine and Environmental Technology. Join Dr. Jim Du’s lab as they present fascinating discoveries from zebrafish models, highlighting advancements in biomedical research related to skeletal and cardiac muscle diseases, as well as new insights into environmental thermal stress impacts on health.

Lafayette Gilchrist and New Volcanos, Thursday, Jan. 15, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Keystone Korner. Enjoy a live performance by the renowned Baltimore jazz pianist Lafayette Gilchrist alongside the dynamite funk/jazz ensemble, the New Volcanoes.

Monster Jam, Friday, Jan. 16, through Sunday, Jan. 18, at CFG Bank Arena. Experience thrilling stunts and jaw-dropping tricks performed by skilled monster truck drivers at this action-packed event.

The Warped Tour Band, Friday, Jan. 16, doors open at 7 p.m., at The Recher. Prepare for a memorable night with The Warped Tour Band as they perform alongside Green Day tribute band Dookie and Fall Out Boy tribute band Fake Out Boy, serving up your favorite Emo/pop-punk classics from artists like Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, Blink-182, New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, and many more.

Kings of Soul, Friday, Jan. 16, at 8 p.m., Music Center at Strathmore; Saturday, Jan. 17, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m. at Lyric Baltimore. Join world-renowned trumpeter and conductor Byron Stripling, who will lead the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra along with a talented vocal trio, including Chester Gregory, Michael Lynche, and Darren Lorenzo, for a night filled with soul-stirring rhythms and harmonies.

MLK Jr. Day Celebration, Saturday, Jan. 17, 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at The Walters Art Museum. In honor of MLK Jr. Day on January 19, The Walters Art Museum will host an early celebration. Curated by Unique Robinson, this event features performances by multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Ray Winder; Maryland Poet Laureate and founder of The Black Arts District, Lady Brion; and singer-songwriter and “The Voice” semi-finalist Davon Fleming.

Dead Again – Type O Negative Tribute, Saturday, Jan. 17, doors open at 6:30 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m., at Baltimore Soundstage. Join us for a night dedicated to tribute performances, featuring Dead Again honoring Type O Negative; Issues, a tribute to Korn; and Kill the Master, who will pay homage to Metallica’s Cliff-era.

Edgar Allan Poe Birthday & Poe Toaster Murder Mystery, Saturday, Jan. 17, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Westminster Hall & Burying Ground. Join Raven Nevermore: Unsolved Mysteries as they celebrate Edgar Allan Poe’s 217th birthday with a live, podcast-style whodunit.

Damn Near Beer Fest, Sunday, Jan. 18, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Whitehall Mill. Hosted by True Chesapeake, the second annual Damn Near Beer Fest will feature complimentary samples of over 30 non-alcoholic beverages, engaging drinking games, delicious food vendors, and more. Celebrate Dry January in style!

MLK Dare to Dream Day, Monday, Jan. 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the American Visionary Art Museum. AVAM will present its annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., featuring poetry, music and dance performances, interactive workshops, and much more.
